Alfred State Zero Energy Homes

July 30, 2015
Session R2D: Educational Facilities — Room 108
10:15 am  -  11:15 am

Alfred State College of Technology has been integrating and constructing student built Zero Energy homes since 2009 based on our experience with student built Energy Star homes. All homes are completely built by students in carpentry, masonry, HVAC and electrician programs. The first home was built to NAHB Gold standards and is an AASHE award winning home with high end monitoring that includes geothermal, solar thermal, small wind and photovoltaic systems. In 2013 we participated in the China Solar Decathlon building the prototype in Wellsville NY and in 2015 we are participating in the 2015 US Solar Decathlon that will be shipped to California. These homes are being used to develop prototypes for building similar homes in rural Western New York that are in the Western New York Sustainability Plan. Presentation will include lessons learned on these projects.
