Performance assessment of dual tank solar-assisted heat pump in North American locations
The combination of renewable technologies can enable the conversion of more renewable energy. This work demonstrates that a heat pump and solar thermal collectors can operate with synergy to reduce the amount of purchased energy. Simulation results from an experimentally validated TRNSYS model show that significant increased solar collection occurs regardless of location. Several North American locations were investigated, with two main groups of performers found: low and high annual insolation variability. Locations with less annual variability in solar conditions had the best performance increases. Cold and subarctic locations benefited by similar amounts to hot and sunny locations.
